The owl is a sophisticated but very achievable face paint design. The oversized round eyes are the key visual element — get those right and the rest builds naturally around them with layered feather strokes.
Tutorial Overview
Step-by-Step Instructions
Sponge the Brown Base
Apply a warm brown base across the cheek with a sponge, blending lighter tan towards the center of the face.
Draw the Large Eye Circles
Using your round brush, outline two very large white circles for the owl's iconic oversized eyes. These are the focal point.
Fill the Eye Circles
Fill the circles with white paint and let dry. Then paint large yellow irises with round black pupils inside each eye.
Add Feather Layers
With a fine brush and brown paint, paint small V-shaped or U-shaped feather strokes across the chest and forehead area, working in rows.
Paint the Beak
Draw a small curved orange or yellow triangle beak between and below the two eyes.
Wing Details
Add two stylised wing shapes on either side of the body using slightly darker brown paint and more feather strokes.
Moon and Stars
Finish with a small crescent moon and star sparkles in white around the design for a magical nocturnal feel.
