Piranha Plant Face Paint Guide
Mario's most iconic villain plant — now growing right on your cheek!
The Piranha Plant design is a character study in cartoon simplicity — bold shapes, strong color contrast, and recognizable detail. The plant consists of a green warp pipe on the lower cheek and a large red polka-dotted plant head emerging from it with an open, toothy mouth. This guide walks you through the exact design seen in our Morrisville event portfolio.
Why is this design so popular?
Nintendo's Piranha Plant has experienced a massive pop culture resurgence, and gaming-themed face painting has exploded in popularity at events attended by Millennial parents who grew up with Super Mario Bros. This design is equally loved by kids who play Mario today and adults who remember it from their childhood. It's a uniquely recognizable design that instantly sparks joy and nostalgia.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Paint the Green Pipe
The green pipe is the foundation of the design. Using your round brush and forest green, paint a rectangular pipe shape on the lower cheek, with the open top facing upward. The pipe should be about 1 inch wide and 1 inch tall. The sides should be perfectly vertical and the bottom edge horizontal.
Add the Pipe Rim
The Mario pipe has a distinctive wider "rim" at the top. Using the same green, paint a slightly wider rectangle on top of the pipe body, extending about 3–4mm on each side. This rim is what gives the design its instantly recognizable pipe character.
Add 3D Shading to the Pipe
Using a darker green, add a shadow line along the right edge of the pipe body and rim for depth. Add a lighter green or white highlight line along the left edge. This subtle shading transforms the pipe from a flat rectangle to a convincing 3D cylinder.
Paint the Plant Head Shape
The piranha plant head is a large circle (or slightly irregular oval) emerging from the pipe. Using bright red, paint the head rising from the top of the pipe rim. The head should be larger than the pipe width — it creates the comical "too big to fit in the pipe" scale. Leave the center open for the mouth.
Paint the Open Mouth
The Piranha Plant is famous for its wide open, toothy mouth. Using a lighter pink or cream color, paint the interior of the mouth — a large U-shaped area taking up most of the lower half of the red head. This creates the open-mouthed hungry expression.
Add the White Teeth
Using white and your fine brush, paint sharp, pointed teeth along the top and bottom edge of the mouth. The teeth should be triangular and varied in size — real Piranha Plants have slightly uneven, menacing teeth. Add 4–5 teeth on the top and bottom edges each.
Paint White Polka Dots
One of the Piranha Plant's most iconic features is its white polka dots on the red head. Using your round brush and white, paint 5–7 large, evenly-spaced dots across the red area of the plant head (avoiding the mouth area). Make them clearly visible and playfully round.
Add Eyes and Black Outline
Paint two small black dot eyes at the top of the plant head, above the mouth opening. Then use your fine brush and black to add a clean outline around the entire plant head shape and the pipe. The black outline is what gives this design its cartoon-crisp, animation-quality finish.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
✕ Pipe Too Narrow
The Mario pipe is distinctively chunky. If the pipe is too narrow, the design doesn't read as a warp pipe. Make it confidently wide — at least a full inch for cheek art.
✕ Plant Head Same Size as Pipe
The Piranha Plant's head should be noticeably larger than the pipe opening — this is what makes it look comically too big to escape. If the head and pipe are the same width, it loses the Mario character.
✕ Not Enough Black Outline
This is a cartoon design and cartoons live or die by their outlines. Thin, incomplete outlines make the design look unfinished. Use confident black lines around every major element.
Professional Tips
🎮 Reference the Game
Keep a photo of the Piranha Plant on your phone for reference. The original sprite has very specific proportions that immediately read as "that plant." Deviating too far from them makes it look like a generic flower instead.
✨ Add a Green Stem Curl
For extra flair, paint a curling green vine stem emerging from the top of the pipe alongside the plant head. This adds organic movement and makes the design look like the plant is actively lunging toward the viewer.
⚡ Pair with Other Mario Characters
At Mario-themed parties, offer a "Mario Character Menu" — Piranha Plant, star power design, red mushroom, and a "1UP" green mushroom. Mixing character designs across the group creates a fun, cohesive event experience.
Design Variations
- Fire Piranha Plant Use the same design but replace the red polka dots with orange ones and add a small orange-red fireball painting emerging from the plant's mouth, as if it's shooting fire — just like the Fire Piranha Plant variant in the games.
- Petey Piranha Full Face For an advanced version, expand the Piranha Plant to a full face design inspired by the boss character Petey Piranha. This uses the full face as a canvas for a much larger, more detailed plant monster design.
Safety & Skin Care
- Always use professional water-activated face paints — especially important for bright red which can stain if low quality.
- Avoid using craft or acrylic paints for any face painting designs.
- If painting near the eye on young children, ensure they keep still or adjust placement to the safer cheek area.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do kids recognize the Piranha Plant?
Absolutely — and so do their parents! Super Mario Bros is one of the most recognized video game franchises in history, and the Piranha Plant is one of its most iconic enemy characters. Both children who play Mario Switch games today and adults who played the original NES recognize it instantly.
How long does this design take?
A well-practiced Piranha Plant design takes 10–12 minutes including the outlining. The most time-consuming step is the polka dots and teeth details. With practice, experienced painters can complete it in 8 minutes.
Can you do other video game characters as face paint?
Yes! We love creating gaming-themed designs. Popular options include the Star from Mario, the Minecraft creeper face, and Pokemon characters. Ask us at your next event about our gaming design menu.
