Face Painting Insurance: Everything You Need to Know

A complete guide to liability insurance, COIs, and protecting your business.

One of the most common questions new face painters ask is: "Do I really need insurance?" The short answer is yes. In this guide, we'll break down exactly what you need, why you need it, and how to understand those confusing terms like "COI."

What is Liability Insurance?

General liability insurance protects your face painting business from financial loss due to property damage, personal injury, or medical expenses. If a child has a severe allergic reaction to your paints (even if you use professional, cosmetic-grade products), or if someone trips over your water bucket, you could be held liable.

Why You Need It

  • Protection from lawsuits: Covering medical bills or legal fees.
  • Booking bigger events: Corporate clients, festivals, and parks will require you to have insurance.
  • Professionalism: It shows clients you are a legitimate, responsible business.

One-Day vs. Annual Policies

If you only paint a few times a year, a one-day (or per-event) policy might be cost-effective. However, if you are painting regularly, an annual policy is usually much cheaper in the long run and allows you to accept last-minute bookings without scrambling for coverage.

What is a COI?

A COI stands for Certificate of Insurance. It's a document provided by your insurance company that proves you have coverage. Event organizers will often ask you to provide a COI and name them as an "Additional Insured" on the certificate.
